Men's basketball comes up short in overtime clash against DePauw

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team dropped an overtime battle to the DePauw Tigers on Tuesday by a score of 95-85.

The teams traded points in the first three minutes of action, with the score seeing two ties before DePauw grabbed the sole lead. The Vikings got as close as one on two different occasions before drawing the score even at 11-11 after a layup by Marieon Anderson with 14:07 on the clock. The Tigers pulled ahead once more after five straight points. At 10:23, Dani Romero knocked down a three-point shot on a pass by Andre Kalver, and Klaver followed with a three-pointer of his own to snatch the one-point advantage. A jump shot by Romero moved the difference to three with a score of 22-19, but DePauw followed with two of their own to regain the upper hand. The Vikings overtook the Tigers after an and-one dunk by Anderson to tally three points for Augie at 25-23. DePauw drew the score even at 25, and Romero followed with a layup in the paint to pull the Vikings up 27-25. The Tigers tied the game at 27-27 and followed with four points to overtake the advantage by a score of 31-27. The visitors created a seven-point differential, and Cam Atkinson closed the first half with a three-point shot to make a 36-32 score entering halftime. 

Returning to the court, shots by Dom Rhoden and Jake Willems got the Vikings within one at 36-35. Augie followed with four straight points, with a fastbreak layup by Klaver putting them ahead 39-38. The two teams drew the score even three additional times before a three-point shot by Atkinson created a three-point gap at 47-44. The Tigers converted a five-point run to overtake the advantage before a three-pointer by Ethan Andre regained the upper hand for Augie. The teams tied the game at 52 with 10 minutes on the clock before a 5-2 run by DePauw moved them ahead by three with a score of 57-54. Both teams traded shots with another three-pointer by Atkinson drawing the score even at 61-61 with 4:54 on the clock. Anderson tipped in Atkinson's shot to give the Vikings the advantage. Free throws by Anderson created the largest gap of six, and the team saw this again after a shot by Willems at the charity line to make a 71-65 score. The Tigers got within one two different times before grabbing a 5-2 run in the final 10 seconds of action to force an overtime period. 

In the overtime period, DePauw quickly found the upper hand after an 8-1 run in the opening three minutes. The Tigers found the double-digit advantage with 1:08 on the clock and held the upper hand for the final minute to take the 95-85 win. 

Four different Vikings scored double-digits, with Anderson leading with 21. Klaver followed with 20 points, while Atkinson had 17 and Willems had 11. Willems also had seven rebounds, and Klavers had five assists.

With the loss, Augie moves to 6-5 on the season and will be back in action on Jan. 3 to host Millikin.
