Men's basketball drops overtime battle to UW-Platteville

Box Score PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team fell to the UW-Platteville Pioneers on Tuesday in overtime by a score of 76-74. 

Jake Williems scored first with a layup, and Andre Klaver followed to obtain the early 4-0 lead. The Pioneers responded, but Cam Atkinson stretched the gap after a driving layup before Ray Maurchie pushed the game to 8-3. A three-point shot from Ethan Andre created a seven-point gap with 12:23 remaining in the opening half. The team saw this difference again after a layup by Klaver off a pass by Williems at 8:00. UW-Platteville went on an eight-point run to even the score at 28 apiece with 4:25 remaining. Atkinson moved the lead back in Augie's favor after a three-point shot from Maurchie. The home team got within one, but Marieon Anderson pulled ahead once more to lead 35-32. Willems moved the game to five after a jump shot with two minutes left in the period. The Pioneers found two attempts at the charity stripe, but the Vikings lead 37-34 after the first 20 minutes of action.  

Returning to action, UW-Platteville drew the score even at 37 before Klaver was fouled on an offensive rebound to find two shots at the free throw line, where he made both. The home team tied the score again at 39-39 and took the lead after an and one. Dom Rhoden regained the lead for Augie on a driving layup, but the Pioneers followed with six consecutive points to lead 46-41 at 12:44. The Vikings trailed until Rhoden kicked off a scoring run for Augustana with a three-point shot from Dani Romero with 3:57 remaining in the period. The Vikings put up six more points in two and a half minutes to draw the score even at 66. Romero drew a shooting foul on his successful attempt to go to the charity line for another attempt before Anderson took his place and added two more to lead 69-66. With 1:26 left, UW-Platteville scored to tie the teams at 69 apiece and regained the lead after a free throw attempt. On a defensive rebound, Klaver was fouled trying to get a defensive rebound to put the Vikings at the charity stripe once more. At the line, Klaver drew the score even at 70-70 to push the game into overtime action. 

In the five minutes of overtime action, the Pioneers found the first basket 40 seconds into the period, but Maurchie quickly followed with a layup off a pass by Klaver to draw even once more. Both teams traded shots before Rhoden put Augustana ahead 74-72 after a rebound layup, and the Vikings held the host team scoreless until 16 seconds remaining when UW-Platteville shot a three-pointer. The Pioneers sealed the victory with a good shot at the charity line with a 76-74 score. 

Four Vikings scored double-digit points in the game, with Willems leading with 10, along with six rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Atkinson followed with 13 points, and Anderson had 12. Klaver collected 10 points, five assists, and eight rebounds.

With the loss, Augie moves to 3-2 on the season and will be back in action at home on Sunday, Nov. 30, to face UW-Oshkosh.
