Vikings bested by Bears in season finale

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Augustana wrapped up its 2025 season on Saturday falling 35–13 to WashU. The Vikings kept the game within one score for three quarters before the Bears used a 21-point fourth quarter to pull away.

In the first, on Augustana's opening drive the Vikings would turn the ball over on downs giving WashU the ball on 34-yard line. WashU opened the scoring early on a 34-yard touchdown run capitalizing on the field position. On Augustana's next drive, the Vikings would drive 52-yards converting on two third downs before a 4th-and-six pass was broken up to give the Bears the ball. WashU's next drive was short lived as on 3rd-and-six Darren Oregon would break up a pass at the stick to give the Vikings the ball. Augustana answered WashU's TD late in the first quarter with an 84-yard march. Sean Schlanser and Mikey Brosnan fueled the drive with a series of short receptions for 18 yards, and a 40-yard strike from Jimmy Makuh to Ethan Vrabec set up a one-yard touchdown run by Makuh to even the score at 7–7.

In the second, the Bears gained a 14–7 advantage with a three-yard run, needing 10 plays after taking over at midfield. The Vikings following drive was promising as Keegan Otte would gain 26 yards on four touches, Makuh would then find Vrabec for 15 yards to convert a 3rd-and-14 and set the Vikings up at the Bears 16. Following a short rush, Makuh would be picked off on a jump ball and giving the visitors the ball with 2:35 to go in the half. The Vikings defense would hold and keep the score 14-7 at halftime.

Both defenses held firm in the third quarter, combining for five punts and limiting each offense to fewer than 50 total yards as the Vikings trailed by just one possession entering the fourth.

In the fourth, WashU would be forced to punt on their first drive of the period, however the Vikings would muff the punt and set the Bears up at Augustana's 27-yard line. The Bears broke the game open following the momentum play with a touchdown run of 18 yards, stretching the lead to 21–7. The Vikings would have another promising drive deep into Bears territory with Makuh completing seven passes on the drive including a 32-yard strike to senior Adam Gallagher. However, being forced into a 4th-and-nine on the WashU 20-yard line the Vikings would fail to convert. The Bears would fail to advance the ball past midfield and were forced to punt. Augustana gained possession and found their biggest play of the day as Makuh connected with Gallagher on a 50-yard touchdown down the right sideline with 1:18 remaining. The extra point was blocked, making the score 28-13. In the closing minutes, a Vikings onside attempt was returned by the Bears for the score, and any chance of Senior Day heroics were shunned away closing the game at 35–13.

Makuh completed 24 of 36 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown, finding seven different receivers. Gallagher led the group with 82 yards on two catches, including the long score, while Vrabec hauled in three receptions for 63 yards. Schlanser added eight grabs for 50 yards and Brosnan contributed 53 yards on five receptions. Ben Ludlum paced the ground attack with 55 rushing yards and Otte showed future promise combining for 52 all-purpose yards on eight touches.

Defensively, Frank Lacny and Toby Splitt each posted six and five total tackles, respectively, while Dino Hunt and TJ Klein both recorded tackles for loss. Oregon registered the key pass breakup, and Ronde Worrels added a quarterback hurry. Augustana finished with 350 yards of total offense compared to WashU's 292 but was limited to one score in four red-zone trips.

The Vikings conclude the season at 7–3 overall and 6–3 in conference play.
