Football hosts WashU for final home game

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings are set to host the Washington University Bears on Nov. 15 at Charles D. Lindberg Stadium. 

Augustana enters the weekend with a 7-2 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the CCIW, and recently picked up a 23-3 victory over Carthage. The Vikings never trailed in the win and struck quickly and struck quickly in their first possession on a 72-yard drive to the end zone. After 10 plays, Jimmy Makuh connected with Ethan Vrabec for a two-yard touchdown, and Jacob Garbett sealed the extra point. In Carthage's first drive, the team got into the red zone at the Augustana seven-yard line. Carl Thomas responded with a four-yard tackle for loss, dropping the Firebirds back to the 11. They followed with two incompletions, with Darren Oregon breaking up a pass in the end zone on third-and-11 to force a field goal. Carthage had the ball to start the second quarter, which ended after Ronde Worrels forced a fumble and Zach Gray recovered the ball at their own 13. The Vikings' possession ended in downs with a blocked punt, but followed with an eight-play drive resulting in a touchdown. With 3:43 remaining in the half, Makuh passed the ball to Sean Schlanser for a 16-yard touchdown to make a 14-3 score. Augie's final drive of the first half began with 1:51 on the clock, which converted in downs, but Garbett knocked down a 40-yard field goal to move the game 17-3 entering halftime.   

Returning to the field, both teams saw two drives, with the Vikings' fourth drive capitalizing on another successful field goal attempt from 34 yards to create a 20-3 score. Augustana had the ball to begin the final quarter, with the Vikings seeing 10 plays with Garbett closing with a 38-yard field goal to push the gap to 20 with a score of 23-3. Makuh finished the day 17-for-25 with 165 yards and two touchdowns, while Keegan Otte led with 22 rushing attempts for 100 yards and four receptions for 18 yards. Vrabec finished the game with three catches for 55 yards, while Schlanser had 54 yards on three receptions. Defensively, Thomas led with 10 tackles, two tackles for loss for 11 yards, and 0.5 sack for a loss of seven yards. Toby Splitt followed with six solo tackles and three assisted for a total of nine. Garbett totaled 11 points on three successful field goals for a total of 112 yards, along with six kickoffs for 325 yards and two extra points made. 

WashU sits at 7-2 on the season and 6-2 in conference action. The Bears are coming off a 42-14 victory over North Park at home last Saturday. Their opponents quickly scored to take the lead after a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown. WashU scored on its second drive of the game on a five-yard pass in the end zone. Both teams remained scoreless until the second quarter when the Bears quarterback Levi Moore ran the ball in for a touchdown with the extra point following to push them ahead 14-7. After a forced punt, Moore connected with Makael Carter for a 46-yard touchdown pass to move the game 28-7 entering the halftime break. WashU didn't see another score five minutes left in the third with Moore running the ball in once more for a three-yard touchdown for a 42-7 score. North Park added another touchdown to the scoreboard, but was unable to take the lead to close the game at 42-14. WashU had 398 yards of total offense (261 passing, 137 rushing) while North Park had 166 total yards (200 passing, -34 rushing). Moore went 19-for-21 for 202 yards with two passing touchdowns and also ran for 36 yards on 13 carries with three touchdowns. Kinoshita ran for 41 yards on 11 attempts. Carter led the receivers with 103 yards on eight receptions and two touchdowns. Lazard had 50 yards on two receptions with a touchdown. Defensively, Montgomery had four solo tackles with three tackles-for-loss and two sacks. Junior Joy Chane had three solo tackles with one tackle-for-loss and one pass breakup.

The Bears hold a 5-1 all-time series record over the Vikings, with WashU claiming a 45-24 win a season ago in St. Louis. In the game, Vrabec caught five passes for 40 yards. 

Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. following senior day recognition.
