Football powers to win over Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings football team rolled to a dominant 42-21 win at home over Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Saturday afternoon.

Augustana came out firing on its opening possession, marching 97 yards after being backed up to its own 3-yard line following a holding penalty on the kickoff. Shot caller Jimmy Makuh would connect with running back Ben Ludlum 24-yard strike on 2nd-and-6 to give the Vikings breathing room. Ludlum would continue to set the tone breaking off runs of 11, 10, and 6 yards as Makuh completed three passes on the drive, including a 15-yard connection to Sean Schlanser to move inside the red zone. After briefly losing yardage on a scramble, Makuh rebounded by finding Schlanser again on the next play for a 25-yard touchdown, giving the Vikings a 7–0 lead at the 10:30 mark.

The Augustana defense responded with a quick possession, forcing a punt from Illinois Wesleyan's own 43. The Vikings leaned on Ludlum again on their next possession, on 2nd-and-10 he picked up nine yards to bring up 3rd-and-1 which Ludlum would convert with a carry for 10 yards. The next play a holding penalty stalled the drive, bringing up 1st and 20 and forcing Augustana to punt.

Illinois Wesleyan began their drive at their own 10-yard line with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter. Malik Gray opened with a 4-yard run, and on the next play, the Titans flipped the field as Dermot Smyth connected with Will Nazha for a 30-yard completion to the IWU44. Gray followed with a 7-yard rush into Augustana territory, but the drive briefly stalled when cornerback Darren Oregon made a key pass breakup on a throw to the right, closing quickly to knock the ball away and force 3rd-and-3. IWU converted on the next play with a 9-yard completion to Jimmy Deacy at the AUG40. Smyth kept the chains moving with a 1-yard run, but an incomplete pass was followed by a 21-yard strike to Cooper King down to the Vikings' 18-yard line to cap the sequence.

In the second, the Titans capped their drive with quarterback Smyth punching in a 5-yard rushing touchdown at the 12:55 mark to tie the game at 7–7.

Augustana responded immediately with another methodical, high-tempo drive. Starting from their own 30-yard line, the Vikings leaned on Ludlum, who powered through runs of 8 and 12 yards while adding a 6-yard reception. Makuh then connected with Schlanser for 12 yards and after Josh Lim rush for six yards, Makuh found Jake Miller over the middle for a 25-yard touchdown strike with 9:14 left in the half, putting Augustana back in front 14–7.

Illinois Wesleyan attempted to answer and moved quickly into Viking territory behind chunk plays to Nazha and Deacy. The Titans reached the Augustana 11-yard line, but the Viking defense stood tall, forcing four straight incompletions including a crucial fourth-down stop with 2:16 remaining.

Taking over at their own 3-yard line, Augustana mounted a momentum-stealing, 97-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes of the half. Makuh completed passes to Ethan Vrabec, Schlanser, Mikey Brosnan, and Adam Gallagher, then used his legs for a gain of 6 yards. After finding Miller to convert a key 3rd-and-4, Makuh picked up a 17-yard scramble to reach the IWU 10-yard line. On 3rd-and-7, Makuh found Miller again across the middle for a 7-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left, capping the drive and extending the lead to 21–7 at halftime.

In the third, Illinois Wesleyan opened with the football, but Augustana forced an early third-down stop when Carl Thomas broke up a 3rd-and-3 pass at the Viking 44-yard line. However, on 4th down, IWU converted with a throw to Nazha, who broke free for a 44-yard touchdown, trimming the lead to 21–14 with 9:37 on the clock.

Augustana's offense responded immediately. Ludlum ripped off a 12-yard carry on the first play, then added gains of 5 and 7 yards, moving the chains to midfield. Moments later, Makuh connected with Gallagher for 38 yards down the left sideline, putting the Vikings in the red zone. On 3rd-and-4, Makuh found big target Miller on a quick route for 7 yards and the touchdown, capping a 75-yard drive and pushing the lead back to 28–14 with 5:26 remaining.

Just two plays into IWU's next drive, the Viking defense delivered again. Linebacker Toby Splitt intercepted the Titans at the IWU 25-yard line, marking Augustana's first takeaway of the game. The Vikings would fail to capitalize, after a negative first down play would go three-and-out.

With 3:38 left in the quarter, Illinois Wesleyan crossed midfield, but the Viking defense made timely stops. On 1st-and-10 from the AUG35, Travis Kenzevich would get his hands in to break down a potential big play for the Titans. After a first down at the Augustana 35, Smyth dropped back and was sacked for an 11-yard loss by defensive lineman Ronde Worrels, forcing a 3rd-and-21. IWU converted one more first down, driving inside the 10, but Dino Hunt and Peter Stapleton stonewalled a 2-yard rush at the 1-yard line as time wound down, keeping the score 28–14 Augustana at the end of the third.

In the fourth, Illinois Wesleyan opened at the goal line and would convert cut into the deficit, as Malik Gray punched in a 1-yard touchdown just four seconds into the period to make it 28–21. Augustana's next drive stalled after a pair of negative plays and a personal foul extended the possession, but the Vikings were forced to punt near midfield.

The Titan offense had a chance to pull even, but the Viking defense stood tall. After a quick first down, Kenzevich would show up big again with a PBU on 4th-and-5 for the Titans and put the ball in the hands of the Vikings offense with 8:12 to play.

The Vikings capitalized. Ludlum broke free for a 19-yard burst on the first play of the drive, setting up Makuh, who found Schlanser for his second touchdown of the day a 14-yard strike that pushed the lead to 35–21 with 6:06 to go.

On the ensuing Titan possession, Nate Simon jumped a deep pass and came up with the interception for the Vikings at the IWU 42 and returned it to the 5-yard line. Three plays later, Ludlum powered in from two yards out to stretch the advantage to 42–21 with 4:23 left on the clock.

Illinois Wesleyan continued to battle, but the Viking defense stood late with an interception by Cole Schroeder to slam the door. Augustana drained the final minute with, sealing a dominant 42–21 win.

Quarterback Makuh delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, finishing 19-of-28 for 259 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. He spread the ball efficiently, with Miller emerging as his top target hauling in five catches for 59 yards and three touchdowns. Schlanser added six receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns, while Gallagher added 50 yards on two receptions. On the ground, Ludlum anchored the rushing attack with 25 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing 44 receiving yards.

Defensively, Splitt anchored the unit with nine tackles and an interception, while Hunt added five stops. Stapleton finished with four tackles while Worrels dominated up front with a pair of sacks for 16 yards lost. The Vikings' secondary came up clutch as Simon and Schroeder each recorded interceptions.
