ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings football team is set to host the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Saturday at Charles D. Lindberg Stadium.
The Vikings enter the weekend with a 5-2 overall record and 4-2 in conference action after a 76-174 loss to the No. 1-ranked North Central this past Saturday. In the second quarter,
Jimmy Makuh sparked the drive with a 27-yard strike to
Brett Holcomb, followed by quick completions to
Ethan Vrabec and
Jake Miller to move the Vikings to the red zone. Two plays later, Makuh connected with Miller once again across the middle for a six-yard touchdown, capping a 62-yard drive in under three minutes.
David Finfer guided Augie in the third for 69 yards in nine plays, capping the drive with a connection with
Zamari Robinson on the 15-yard strike to score.Â
Makuh completed the game 19-of-34 for 190 yards, while Miller received five passes for 76 yards.
Keegan Otte paced the ground with 37 yards on seven carries, while
Ben Ludlum added 38 rushing yards. Defensively,Â
Toby Splitt led the way with 12 tackles, while
Nate Simon and
Dino Hunt each added six apiece.Â
Illinois Wesleyan returns to action with a 4-3 overall record and 4-2 in conference action after a 49-21 victory over North Park a week ago. Both teams were neck-and-neck before the Titans outscored North Park in the second quarter in the final minutes of the half with a three-yard run. Illinois Wesleyan kept the offensive momentum up in the second half, outscoring their opponents in the third and holding them scoreless in the final 15 minutes of play. Overall, the Titans finished with 425 total yards against their opponents' 260, and went 6-for-10 on third downs and 2-for-3 on fourth. Danny Knet ran the ball 18 times, accruing 93 yards and two touchdowns, while Dermot Smyth threw for four touchdowns with 237 passing yards, and Will Nazha led the team with five receptions for 80 yards. Defensively, Joey DeMaio topped the team with seven tackles, while Matt Worthington added 27 yards on fourth-down conversions on special teams. Nazha also added 166 yards in kick returns, highlighted by a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.Â
The Titans hold a 49-39-1 all-time series record over Augustana, with the Vikings falling to Illinois Wesleyan by a score of 29-21 a season ago in Bloomington. In the matchup,
Sean Schlanser grabbed a game-high of 10 catches for 92 yards, followed by
Breyden Smith with seven catches and Vrabec with six.Â
