ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings return to Charles D. Lindberg Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 18, to face the Carroll Pioneers.
Augustana sits at 4-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. The team returns to action after a 48-7 victory over Elmhurst this past weekend. The Vikings came out firing on their first drive with
Jimmy Makuh leading a balanced seven-play, 55-yard march, finding
Ben Ludlum out of the backfield for a 26-yard touchdown to put Augie on top early. Elmhurst answered, but the Vikings reclaimed control with a 63-yard drive to create a 14-7 score.
In the second quarter, Makuh connected with
Jake Miller for a 33-yard strike to line up at the two-yard line, setting up his own one-yard keeper touchdown. After a quick three-and-out defensive stop, Ludlum broke loose on a 34-yard run before finishing the drive with a 1-yard catching touchdown. With 1:11 left on the clock after a Bluejay punt, Augie marched 52 yards to give
Jacob Garbett a successful field goal attempt to expire time and move the score to 32-7.Â
Augustana stayed strong after the halftime break, Makuh connected with
Ethan Vrabec for a 46-yard touchdown. After the Viking defense forced a three-and-out,
JJ Gamlin secured a 29-yard punt return. Augie got down the field to put Garbett at the 28-yard line for another field goal to extend the lead 48-7.
David Finfer checked in for Augie, showing promising minutes in the fourth, but both end zones would stay empty in the final frame.
Makuh completed 25 of 27 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns. Ludlum totaled 146 yards with two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. Vrabec added 91 yards, while Sean Schlanswer notched six catches for 71 yards, and
Mikey Brosnan hauled in seven passes for 41 yards. On the ground, Ludlum led with 83 yards on eight carries, Finfer chipped in 34 yards on the ground and 16 through the air, and
Josh Lim added 14 yards.

Defensively, Splitt anchored the group with 10 tackles and a pass breakup, while Dino Hunt tallied seven stops and two tackles for loss. Shiloh Jones and Ryan Gustafsson each recorded 1.5 sacks, Keany added a sack and two tackles for loss, and Kenzevich intercepted two passes to pace a Viking defense that finished with 13 tackles for loss and five sacks.
Garbett went 2-for-2 on field goals and 4-for-5 on PATs, while Gamlin sparked special teams with a 29-yard punt return.
Carroll enters the contest with a 2-3 overall record and 2-2 in the CCIW. The Pioneers return to action after a 24-10 win over North Park last weekend. Carroll scored three touchdowns before halftime to create a 21-3 lead. Quarterback Charlie King connected for a 15-yard score midway through the first before a 49-yard strike to push the margin 14-3. Reed Breckheimer added a five-yard rushing touchdown late in the half before North Park's lone goal. The Pioneers outgained North Park 169-90 in the first half. Carroll extended its lead to 24-3 on a 50-yard field goal by Special Team Player of the Week Matthew Swink. Their opponent closed the game with a touchdown pass to conclude the game. King finished 17-of-26 for 214 yards and two touchdowns.Â
Augustana holds a 25-17-2 all-time series record over the Pioneers. The Vikings fell by a score of 30-20 a season ago on the road.
Breyden Smith led all receivers with a game-high of nine catches and 106 yards.Â
