ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings remain on the road Saturday, Oct. 11, to face the Elmhurst Bluejays.
Augustana sits at 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the CCIW. The team is returning to action after a 24-21 victory over North Park last weekend. North Park grabbed the early lead before Augie got on the board in the second with a 28-yard field goal by
Jacob Garbett. On the next drive after an interception by
Toby Splitt,
Jimmy Makuh led the offense 97 yards down the field, capped with a 30-yard touchdown pass to
Breyden Smith to lead 10-7 entering halftime.
Returning to the field, Makuh connected with
Sean Schlanser and
Jake Miller to tally another touchdown. North Park responded, but the Vikings pushed the lead to 24-14 after a three-yard score by Miller.
Darren Oregon picked off North Park's first drive in the fourth. North Park trimmed the margin; however, Splitt snagged his second interception at the North Park six-yard line to seal the game with a 24-21 victory.
Makuh completed 26 of 33 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns. Smith led the receivers with 11 catches for 82 yards and a score. On the ground,
Ben Ludlum carried the ball 17 times for 65 yards. Defensively,
Dino Hunt led Augie with eight tackles, while Splitt had five tackles and two interceptions.
Elmhurst enters the weekend with a 1-3 overall record and 0-3 in conference action. The Bluejays return to action after dropping to the Carthage Firebirds by a score of 31-7 a week ago. The Firebirds held Elmhurst scoreless until the fourth quarter after John Odom guided the Blujays 75 yards downfield, capping the play with a rushing score inside the red zone. Elmhurst totaled 133 yards on 28 carries, with Odom rushing 29 yards and A.D. Russell hauling in two passes for 20 yards. Defensively, Elmhurst tallied 73 total tackles and two sacks. Etor Agbenya led with 3.0 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and a shared sack.Â
Augustana holds a 59-8-1 all-time series record over the Bluejays. The Vikings secured a 35-21 victory a season ago at home. Augie out-gained Elmhurst 408-259 in the win, with 352 of those coming on the ground. Ludlum finished with 84 yards, and
Josh Lim had 66. Smith caught two passes for 39 yards. Defensively, the Vikings held the Bluejays to just six rushing yards and posted six sacks, including two apiece from
TJ Klein and
Teke Nieto.
Dylan Burton led the way with nine tackles.
