ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team dominated the Westminster Blue Jays on Saturday by a score of 3-0 with set scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-17.
Westminster got on the board first and took a slight advantage after a 6-3 run. The Vikings trailed by no more than three until a kill by Zach Moreano evened the score at 9-9. Both teams drew even two additional times before five consecutive points put Augie on top with a 16-11 score. An attack error by the Blue Jays moved the gap to as many as seven with a score of 19-12. Ben Schultz closed out the first set with a kill from Colin Schaefer to secure the set 25-20.
The Vikings kicked off the second set with a 4-0 run to take the early advantage. Augie secured a 10-point lead on two different occasions before a service ace by Ryan Huntington made the largest advantage of the set with 11 to make a 25-14 score.
The third set started with three ties before a five-point run got Augie to an 8-3 advantage. The Vikings separated the gap to nine after a service ace by Zaccary Ruiz at 24-15. A kill by Alexander Sulewski concluded the game with a 25-17 score.
As a team, Augie hit .420 on the night while holding the Blue Jays to a .096 mark. Cole Clarke led the team with nine kills, while Moreano put up nine digs, and Schaefer had 35 assists.
With the win, the Vikings move to 2-0 on the season and will be back in action on Monday, January 20 for two matchups against UW-Stevens Point and Benedictine.
