Men's basketball wins overtime thriller over Carroll

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball picked up a come-from-behind home victory over the Carroll Pioneers on Saturday, winning in overtime by a score of 85-77.

Colton Gillingham began the game with an offensive rebound and putback to give Augie the early lead, but the Pioneers answered with a made three-pointer and held remained out in front for the next seven minutes of action. Facing a 13-6 deficit, the Vikings came out of a timeout with 10 straight points, seeing a pair of threes by Anthony Cooper and two baskets from Matt Hawkins. Carroll countered with a three to tie things back up and eventually pulled back out in front, earning its largest cushion of the contest of eight right before the half. The Pioneers led 34-26 at the break after hitting 44 percent of their looks and 46 percent from behind the arc. Augustana knocked down just one fewer shot than Carroll in the opening 20 minutes, but saw a 6-2 disadvantage from distance.

Augustana inched closer to kick off the second until a three-pointer by Chase Larsen capped off a 6-0 scoring spurt to even the game at 36 apiece. From there, the two teams traded baskets, neither seeing a lead of more than one possession for the nex three minutes. Carroll broke away from the tightly-contested game with a 9-0 run around the 12-minute mark and help a multi-possession advantage up until the halfway point of the period. With the score reading 56-53 in favor of the visitors, Carroll again strung together a big scoring run, this time pushing its lead out to double figures at 64-53. The Vikings fought back, using nine straight points to pull within two until a three by Tyler Knuth reclaimed the lead for Augie with three minutes remaining. It was the first of two big threes for Knuth down the stretch, later hitting another with 55 seconds showing to again give the Vikings a two-point lead at 72-70. Following a pair of free throws by Mike Hamilton to extend the game to 74-71, the Pioneers connected on a corner three with just two seconds to spare to push the game to overtime.

In the extra session, Augie struck first with an Evan Ambrose three-pointer and never trailed the rest of the way. Carroll responded with a free throw on the ensuing possession, but points from Knuth and another jumper by Ambrose extended the lead out to six. Augustana held the visitors without a made basket in the five minutes of overtime, running away with the eight-point win.

Knuth and Ambrose led the Vikings with 17 points apiece, while Chase Larsen notched a double double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Both teams shot under 40 percent, with the Vikings knocking down 25 of their free throw attempts for a 76 percent clip. Augie out-rebounded the Pioneers 56-37.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 10-6 on the season and 3-4 in CCIW action. The team will hit the road to face No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday.
