ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team dropped both matches on Saturday to wrap up its final day in the Twin Cities, falling to the Macalester Scots by a score of 3-1 before losing to the St. Catherine Wildcats in straight sets.
Macalester jumper out to a quick 1-0 lead after a 25-14 win in the opening frame, but the Vikings fought back to even the score with a 26-24 win in set two. Augie scored the first four points of the game, but later had to use a 4-0 spurt to erase a four-point deficit to even the score at 20 apiece. The two teams traded points from there, with the Scots the first to reach set point at 24-23. Augustana rattled off three straight, seeing consecutive kills from
Alexis Richards and
Mallory Coley before a service ace by
Leah Rizzo clinched the victory.
Another close battle ensued in set three and it was the Vikings the first to reach game point at a score of 24-22. Macalester notched two rallies in a row, but a kill by Richards gave Augie its third set point of the frame. The Scots secured four of the next five points to steal the game by a score of 28-26. Macalester sealed the match win with a 10-point triumph in the fourth.
Emily Schipper led Augie with 17 kills, while Rizzo and
Alyssa Millan had 20 assists each. Richards boasted a team-best 20 digs to go with eight kills.
In the finale against the Wildcats, the two teams went back and forth to begin the opening set, finding themselves in a deadlock at 15-15. From there, the Wildcats were the first to string together a scoring run, securing the next three rally wins for a three-point lead. Augie answered with six points in a row to swing the three-point margin in its favor. After trading a score, the Wildcats stormed back with four straight points to regain the lead at 23-22, but consecutive kills from
Grace Gustafson gave Augustana set point. St. Kate's responded with the final three tallies to claim game one by a final of 26-24. The home team proceeded to take the following two frames by scores of 25-20 and 25-22 to complete the sweep.
Schipper led the offensive charge in match two with 11 kills. Four players notched double-digit digs, led by
Ashley Awbrey with 16. Schipper was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the losses, the Vikings drop to 1-2 on the season. The team will be back in action next Saturday against Benedictine and Lake Forest.
