LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday at Lake Forest, falling to the Benedictine Eagles by a score of 3-2 before knocking off the host Foresters in three sets.
In match one vs. the Eagles, the Vikings grabbed the first two sets, winning the opener 25-20 before taking the second by double digits. Augie closed game one with five of the final six points scored, seeing two kills from
Emily Schipper and one by
Carli Udovich during that span. The Vikings cruised to a 10-point win in the following frame, using a 6-0 run mid-set to pull away.
In the third, Benedictine broke away from a 15-15 tie with five straight scores and eventually held on for the four-point win to force a fourth set. The Eagles returned the favor with a 10-point of their own, setting up a deciding fifth game. Augie jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the final set, but the Eagles chipped away and took their first lead at a score of 9-8. Consecutive rally wins from Augustana halted the momentum, but Benedictine notched six of the final seven points to seal the match with a 3-2 final.
Schipper led the way offensively with 17 kills, while
Ashley Awbrey and
Alexis Richards each had 15 digs. Richards also tallied double-digit kills with 10.
The Vikings earned a bounce-back victory in the second match of the day, kicking things off with a 25-16 opening-set triumph over the Lake Forest Foresters. Leading by a point at 15-14, Augie rattled off seven straight scores, which included two service aces by Awbrey, to move its advantage out to eight.
Grace Gustafson put the exclamation point on the set with a kill to seal the win.
In set two, the two teams played to a much tighter battle that resulted in a 25-23 decision for the Vikings. After Lake Forest doubled up Augie at 12-6, the Vikings eventually evened the score at 15 and took the lead on the next rally thanks to a an ace by Awbrey. From there, the teams traded leads, but it was Augustana the first to reach set point at 24-22. The Foresters drew within one shortly after, but Schipper's kill gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the match. Augie coasted to a 25-17 victory in the third to complete the sweep.
Schipper had 10 kills to lead the Augustana attack.
With the results, Augie sits at 2-3 on the season. The team will be back in action next weekend when they host the Viking Classic.
