Big first inning boosts Vikings to CCIW title matchup

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Augsutana Vikings baseball team defeated the North Park Vikings on Saturday by a score of 8-4 to move to their third straight CCIW Tournament title matchup.

The Vikings kicked off their third elimination win of the tournament with a huge opening frame. Alex Simon was the first to bat for Augie and walked and advanced to second after Daniel Mosele singled to left field. Grant Biggins reached base on an error by North Park to allow Simon to cross home plate and put the Vikings on the board first. Colton Davis brought in the second run after a ground out and Dymitri Kanellakis followed with a single through the left side to bat Biggins in. Charlie Bergin was responsible for the team's fourth run of the frame with an RBI single and later came in to score via a wild pitch. An infield single by Cole Green continued the scoring onslaught prior to Simon driving in the seventh run in his second at-bat of the inning with a sac fly. The Vikings led 7-0 after one inning of action.

After three scoreless innings both ways, North Park collected a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Davis earned one back in the bottom half with his first home run of the year to move the score to 8-2. The home Vikings put up two more in the seventh, but Addison Southwick worked around two base runners in the eighth before retiring the side in the ninth.

Mosele and McGinnis led the Vikings with two hits apiece, while Davis batted two runs in. Adam Bendoraitis earned the win on the mound in relief and Southwick earned the save after closing the final three innings with five strikeouts.

With the win, Augie improves to 27-16 on the season and moves to the championship against Millikin tomorrow. The Vikings will need to win twice to claim the title, with game one scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
