ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings softball team will remain home on Tuesday, April 9 when they welcome in the Monmouth Fighting Scots for a non-conference doubleheader.
Augie currently sits at 9-7 on the season after splitting a CCIW series with Millikin on Saturday, winning game one by a score of 6-0 before dropping the finale by a final of 4-0. In the win in game one, Augie raced out ahead of Millikin in the opening game with a three-run first inning, fueled by a pair of home runs. After a
Jennica Soliz double,
McKensey Stontz continued her dominance at the plate with her fourth home run in the five games. Two batters later,
Claudia Buchholz sent one over the fence to make it a 3-0 lead for Augie after one inning of action.
In the second, Augustana added another three-spot to double its advantage to six. With two runners on, Soliz brought in the first tally of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice before Stontz added another pair of runs batted in with a two-out double to center field. Augustana brought a 6-0 lead out of the second inning. Millikin threatened in the fifth with runners on second and third with one out, but a groundout and strikeout from
Nadia Ranieri got the Vikings out the inning as they went on to complete the shutout. Augustana out-hit Millikin 9-5 in the win, led by two hits apiece from Ranieri and Stontz. Ranieri earned the win on the mound after throwing a complete game and striking out eight.
On Monday, Ranieri was named the CCIW Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. She currently sits second in the CCIW in ERA at 1.26 and first in strikeouts with 78.
Monmouth enters Tuesday with a 1-19 overall record and is looking to snap a 15-game losing streak. The Scots recently dropped a doubleheader to Luther in their most recent outing back on March 29, falling in game one with a final of 10-0 and game two by a score of 8-2. Monmouth is in search of its first win since March 11, a 15-3 win over Earlham down in Florida. The team is led by Grace Wyman's .348 average at the plate this season where she has racked up 23 hits and four home runs. The Scots are 0-6 on the road this year so far.
Augustana is 53-22 all-time against Monmouth and has won four of the last five meetings. The two teams split a doubleheader in Monmouth last season.
Start time for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
