Women's water polo defeats Connecticut, Penn State Behrend out east

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team began its weekend out east with a pair of victories on Saturday, defeating the Connecticut College Camels by a score of 19-6 before knocking off the host Penn State Behrend Lions by a final of 16-2.

In game one, the Vikings and Camels found themselves in a 2-2 tie after eight minutes of action before Augie pulled away with a 7-1 advantage in the second quarter. Charlotte Newport and Casey Barragan both scored a goal in each of the first two frames, while Maggie Caliendo and Anita Rodgers added two apiece in the second alone. The Vikings led 9-3 at the halftime break.

Another big quarter for Augustana ensued, outscoring Connecticut 5-1 in the third. Five different Vikings scored in the period, with Barragan and Newport each securing their third of the game. Augie added five more to its total through the final eight minutes of play, including three more from Barragan, to complete the 19-6 win.

Barragan led all scorers with six goals, while Annelie McGhee and Rodgers contributed three assists apiece. Lizzie Pelzman made 17 saves in the win.

In game two against Penn State Behrend, the Vikings held a 6-2 lead after one quarter of play, fueled by four scores from Barragan. The Augie defense went on to hold the Lions scoreless for the remainder of the game as they coasted to a 14-point win. The Vikings added onto their four-point differential with three goals in the second to make it 9-2 lead at half. Seven goals from seven different players ensued in the second half to complete the win, with a total of 11 different players tallying at least one point in the game.

Susan Palmentera-Reid earned the win in net after stopping 19 shots.

With the wins, Augie improves to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in the CWPA. The team will close out the regular season tomorrow with games against Grove City and Wheaton (Mass.)
