Vikings claim second straight CWPA title

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team claimed its second straight Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) title on Sunday, defeating the Austin ''Roos by a score of 14-10.

Casey Barragan put the Vikings out in front with the first goal of the afternoon less than a minute in before Annelie McGhee added one herself to move the Augie advantage out to 2-0 around the two-minute mark. Austin answered with its first tally just 14 seconds after McGhee's, but Barragan notched her second of the quarter on the ensuing possession. Annie Opal Dickson earned a score with under a minute to go to double the Vikings' margin to two and the team led 4-2 after eight minutes of play. A low-scoring second quarter followed with each team scoring just once to make it a 5-3 lead for the Vikings at the break. Ocean Akau accounted for the lone goal for Augustana in the frame.

Scoring picked up in the third quarter, beginning with consecutive goals from Maggie Caliendo and Anita Rodgers within 20 seconds of another. Rodgers added one more two minutes later to extend the Vikings' lead out to its largest of five before the team took a 10-6 advantage into the fourth. Barragan grabbed the first three points of the final frame for Augustana as the team never saw its differential dip below three. Charlotte Newport connected on a penalty shot with 1:58 to go to secure the final goal of the game and bring it to its 14-10 final.

Barragan led all players with five goals in the win and was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Newport added five assists, while Lizzie Pelzman earned the win in net with 11 saves, including a penalty shot early in the fourth. Newport and Akau were both named to the CWPA All-Tournament First Team, while Susan Palmentera-Reid was awarded Second Team All-Tournament. Head Coach Ryan Pryor was the recipient of the Coach of the Tournament award.

With the victory, Augustana improves its winning streak to 12 games and record to 19-3. The team will be back in action May 4-5 for the USA Water Polo DIII National Tournament, with the site and matchup yet to be determined.
