WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday against the Wartburg Knights, falling in game one by a score of 6-5 before dropping the finale 10-2.
In game one, Wartburg scored once in the second the game's first tally before adding four more in the fourth to make it a 5-0 game. Another score followed in the sixth for the Knights as they moved the differential out to six heading into the final inning. In the seventh, the Vikings had a comeback effort fall just short. Beginning with back-to-back walks, Augie saw its first run of the day come in via an error before
Brooke Hartzell's single to left pulled the Vikings within four.
Ashlyn Mathers connected on a two-run double during the next at-bat to cut the deficit in half. With runners on the corners,
Jennica Soliz lined out to left and scored Mathers on the sacrifice, but the team could not move the equalizing score in as the home team held on for the one-run victory.
Augustana had seven hits in game one, led by two from Mathers.Â
In game two, the Knights again were the first to jump in front after a four-run second inning. Augie earned two back in the top half of the fourth, seeing an RBI triple from Hartzell before she came in to cross home on
Teagan Nees' infield single. Wartburg walked off the game with six runs in the sixth to complete the win.
With the loss, the Vikings drop to 16-10 on the season. The team will be back in action tomorrow for a conference doubleheader at Carroll.
