Women's water polo coasts to opening-round win at CWPA Championships

Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team won its first game of the CWPA Tournament on Friday, defeating the No. 8 seeded Grove City Wolverines by a score of 22-4.

Augie jumped out to a fast start with the game's first five goals through just over three minutes of play. Ocean Akau notched the first tally of the evening 45 seconds in before the team saw a score from Charlotte Newport, Anita Rodgers, and two from Casey Barragan. Grove City secured its first point at the 4:37 mark, but Barragan answered with her third of the quarter to move Augie's advantage out to 6-1 after eight minutes of action. The Vikings doubled up the Wolverines 4-2 in the second period to bring a 10-3 differential into the halftime break. Udovich grabbed the first point of the second quarter for Augustana, followed by goals from Newport, Carli Udovich, and Barragan.

The Vikings held the Wolverines to just one point through the final two quarters and added five to their total in the third quarter to bring the advantage to 15-4. After Grove City snagged the first tally of the second half, Augie responded with five goals to close out the frame, seeing strikes by Alayna Ickert and two apiece from Annelie McGhee and Jersey Merrick. The Vikings out-scored the Wolverines 7-0 in the fourth to complete the 22-4 victory. Merrick scored twice more in the period, while Udovich added three more to her total.

Udovich led all scorers with five goals, followed by four apiece from Merrick and Barragan. Akau contributed three assists and Natalie Abril stopped 15 shots in net to help lead Augie to the win.

With the victory, Augustana's win streak moves to 10 and they now sit with an 17-3 overall record. The team will be back in action tomorrow against Washington & Jefferson for a trip to the CWPA title game.
