Men's tennis splits pair of close contests

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team split a pair of 5-4 decisions on Sunday at home, defeating the Loras Duhawks in a non-conference battle before falling to the Carroll Pioneers.

Against the Duhawks, Augie stormed back from an early 3-0 deficit with wins in five of the six singles matches. Eliot Saint-Paul was credited with the first point for the Vikings after a win by retirement at No. 6, followed by a pair of quick wins at No. 3, 4, and 5 from Aingeru Garcia, Arthur Mendes, and Arturo Asensio. All three secured one 6-0 set win during their victories. Deepak Vayara proved to be the clincher for the Vikings with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at the No. 1 position. Loras grabbed its lone singles win at No. 2.

In match two against the Pioneers, the Vikings again found themselves facing an early deficit after Carroll notched wins in all three doubles contests. Augie answered with four straight wins in in singles, beginning with Nicolas Navarro's swift 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Timothee Philip was next to secure a point for Augustana following his 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5, while Saman Rezaeyan evened the match with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of his opponent at No. 4. Arthur Hermange moved the Vikings out in front with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1.

Carroll earned a three-set win at No. 2 to deadlock the match at four wins apiece, leaving it all up to No. 3 between Gabriel Luna and Andrew LaBelle. Luna dropped the opening set by a score of 6-3, but bounced back with a 6-4 victory in the second to force a third. The two battled back and forth up to a 5-5 tie, but LaBelle grabbed the final two games to win by a score of 7-5.

With the split, Augustana now sits at 15-7 on the year and 3-3 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Wheaton.
