CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team earned a pair of run-rule wins on Friday in the Windy City, defeating the North Park Vikings in game one by a score of 12-0 before winning the finale by a final of 10-2.
In game one, Augustana scratched across its first run after an error by North Park sent
Nadia Ranieri home. The Vikings added one more to their total the next inning, this time coming off the bat of Ranieri on an RBI single. Following back-to-back singles from
McKensey Stontz and
Ashlyn Mathers to begin the third,
Brooke Hartzell sent a ball over the fence for her first home run of the season and make it a 5-0 score after three innings of action.
The Vikings broke the game open in the top of fifth after two lengthy weather delays. A leadoff double from Mathers quickly came in to score after a two-run home run from
Claudia Buchholz during the next at-bat. An RBI double by
Kennedy Williams extended the lead to 8-0 before a bases-clearing single and error off of a swing from Ranieri moved the margin to double figures. An RBI groundout from Stontz capped off the big inning to bring the game to its 12-0 final score.
Lauren Koster pitched a scoreless bottom half to end the contest by run rule.
Ranieri earned the win on the mound after striking out five in four innings, also finishing 3-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Five others tallied multi-hit performances.Â
In game two, the Vikings pulled away early with a six-spot in the opening frame. Ranieri opened the inning with a single and came around to score two batters later due to an error. Consecutive walks loaded the bases before a single to center by Hartzell made it a 3-0 cushion. Moments later,
Morgan Bielfeldt doubled the advantage with a three-run double and Augie took a 6-0 lead out of the first.Â
Following a scoreless second inning, the Vikings quickly saw a double-digit lead with four more tallies in the third. The first run came in via a North Park error prior to
Lilli Burton getting in on the action with an RBI double.
Jennica Soliz accounted for the final two scores of the frame with a two-run double of her own to stretch the differential out to 10. The home team added their first two runs of the day in the fourth, but Koster's scoreless fifth shut the door on the second run-rule victory of the day.
Ranieri earned her second win of the day on the mound, while Hartzell led the charge offensively with two hits and two runs batted in.
With the wins, Augustana improves to 13-7 on the year and 4-2 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action tomorrow at Carthage.
