Baseball secures first game in Florida over Muskingum

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team defeated the Muskingum Muskies 8-3 on Friday in their first game of the Gene Cusic Classic.

Cole Green began the game with a single and stolen base to give Augie a runner in scoring position right away. After moving to third, Green crossed home plate on an Alex Simon RBI single for the game's first score. Muskingum tallied a run of their own in the bottom of the second to make a 1-1 score.

Simon hit his second single of the day to right field and stole second during his next at-bat in the top of the third. Colton Davis got on base after a walk before both moved over after a wild pitch. With two outs, Ethan Sosnowski collected an RBI after a single to third base brought Simon home. In the next ensuing inning, the Vikings earned another with an RBI sacrifice fly from Green to allow Ben Gonzales to cross home plate.

Biggins began a three-run fifth inning for the Vikings with a walk and came in two batters later on a Davis RBI double to push the lead to three.  Sosnowski then followed with a two-run to push the margin out to 6-1. The Muskies added two to their score in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, but the Vikings notched the final runs of the night in the top half of the night on a two-out, two-run single from Carter Foat to bring the final score to 8-3.

Four Vikings secured two hits in the win, with Sosnowski and Davis both leading the way with the lone extra-base hits of the game. Green also had two stolen bases, while Simon had one. Cameron Miller received the win after 3.2 innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 6-3 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow to face Scranton and Franklin & Marshall starting at 11 a.m. CST.
