Men’s volleyball defeats Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team defeated the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Wednesday in four sets to earn their first conference win of the season.

The Vikings secured the first two points of the match, but the Titans tied the score at two moments later. Both teams went back and forth three more times before a three-point run by Augie made it an 8-5 score. The Vikings increased the lead to as many as 10 after eight consecutive points before Aidan Bolen closed out the first set with a service ace to sit 13 points ahead with a final score of 25-12.

In a back-and-forth second set, the two teams were evened up on the scoreboard more than 10 times before Augie secured a lead by more than a point following a kill by Bolen and a bad set by the Titans. Illinois Wesleyan pulled even two additional times before three of the final four points of the game went in favor of Augie to secure a 26-24 win.

Illinois Wesleyan answered with a 25-21 win in the third set, but the Vikings had a strong start in the fourth with a 7-1 run to find a six-point gap. Augie maintained its separation and fended off a late rally from the Titans to hang on for the three-point win.

Bolen led the Vikings with 13 kills to lead the Vikings, while Zach Moreano had 10 and two solo blocks. Colin Schaefer had 31 assists and Max Sellers had 16 digs.

With the win, Augie moves to 14-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Vikings will hit the road on Saturday, March 9 to battle against North Park.
