Vikings score 28 runs in sweep of Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team converted 28 hits into 28 runs across two wins on Wednesday, defeating the Sewanee Tigers by scores of 15-3 and 13-5.

In game one, Augie earned a run in its opening at-bat, cashing in on a leadoff infield single with a sacrifice fly by Ashlyn Mathers. A wild pitch accounted for the Vikings' second run during their next at-bat, followed by an RBI single from Nadia Ranieri. Augustana led 3-0 after two innings of play.

The Vikings broke the game open with an eight-run inning in the third, beginning with a two-run single up the middle from Lilli Burton to make it 5-0. Two batters later, Ranieri earned her second RBI of the contest with another single to center before a grand slam by McKensey Stontz pushed the Augie lead out to double figures. Brooke Hartzell singled later in the inning to drive in the team's eighth point of the frame.

After Sewanee earned its first tally of the game, Hannah Waddell began a busy fifth inning with an RBI infield single, followed by a two-run double by Maya Viel to stretch the margin to 13. Mikaylin Hofer put the exclamation point on the scoring onslaught with another run-scoring hit to give the team its highest point total of the season.

The Vikings finished game one with 15 hits, 10 coming from different players. Ranieri and Hartzell each contributed a three-hit effort, while Stontz led all players with four runs driven in. Ranieri earned the win on the mound after striking out five in three innings.

In game two, Stontz began the scoring for the Vikings with another home run in the first, this time a solo shot to give them a 1-0 lead. The Tigers answered with their biggest inning of the afternoon, scratching across three in the bottom half for the early advantage. Emily Gad's two-run single the next at-bat evened the score at 3-3 after two innings.

A scoreless third and fourth inning followed. Augustana broke the deadlock with an RBI groundout from Lauren Durst in the top of the fifth, but the Tigers reclaimed the lead in the bottom half after a two-run home run. The Vikings went back out in front in the sixth after a Stontz RBI double and bases-loaded walk to Kennedy Williams. Augie put up nine runs combined between the final two innings, capped off with a Mathers grand slam in the seventh to bring the game to its 13-5 final score.

Augustana pounded 13 hits in the win, with four players securing multi-hit performances. Mathers finished 2-2 at the plate with five runs brought in. Teagan Nees also added two base hits.

Ranieri earned her second win on the day pitching, going 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.

The team will be back in action Friday for an exhibition vs. Tennessee Wesleyan.
