ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team claimed a back-and-forth victory over the SUNY New Paltz Hawks on Tuesday, winning by a score of 5-4.
Augustana faced an early deficit after New Paltz grabbed wins in two of three doubles matches.
Hattie Timerman and
Mikayla Kelly earned a point for the Vikings following an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 slot.
All six singles matches resulted in a tiebreaker of some sort, with only the No. 1 and No. 6 spots being decided in consecutive sets.
Caitlyn Hanulikova won a first-set tiebreaker before taking the second set 6-0 to complete a win at No. 1, while New Paltz claimed the other straight-set victory at No. 6 to go with a win at No. 5. All three matches at No. 2, 3, and 4 went in favor of Augie.
Anna-Maria Huebel bounced back from an opening-set loss to win by a final score of 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 at No. 2.
Maitreyi Shrikhande won her contest at No. 4 by a final of 6-4, 1-6, 10-7. With the match tied 4-4,
Hannah Colbert earned the match-sealing win at No. 3, bouncing back from a 7-5 first-set defeat with a 6-2 win in the second before notching the tiebreaker 10-3. Augie's four wins in singles sealed the 5-4 team victory.
Later in the day, the Vikings dropped a close 5-4 decision to the Whitworth Pirates. Augie faced a 2-1 deficit after doubles play, with the lone win coming at the No. 1 spot from Hanulikova and Colbert by a score of 8-2. Each team won three times in singles to give the Pirates the slight 5-4 triumph. Hanulikova won her match at No. 1, securing a first-set tiebreaker before grabbing the second by a score of 6-1. Augustana now sits at 7-11 on the season and will return to action on April 6 against Loras at home.
