ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team earned its third win in as many tries during its spring break trip to Florida, defeating the Whitworth Pirates by a score of 5-4 on Tuesday.
Augie claimed an early 2-1 lead in the match after winning a pair of doubles matches to start. The Vikings saw an 8-2 win at No. 1 from
Timothee Philip and
David Larraga, as well as an 8-1 victory at No. 2 from
Saman Rezaeyan and
Nicolas Navarro.
In singles, each team won three times to give Augie the slight 5-4 win overall.
Aingeru Garcia was the first to finish with a win, taking down his opponent at No. 5 by a score of 6-2, 6-3. Whitworth earned wins at No. 6 and No. 2 to even the match at 3-3, but
Deepak Vayara's 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 moved the Vikings back out in front. Larraga earned the match-clinching win with the score tied 4-4, defeating his counterpart at No. 1 by a final of 6-3, 2-6, 1-0.
With the win, Augustana improves to 11-4 on the season. The Vikings will wrap up their trip in Florida tomorrow morning against DePauw.
