ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team earned a pair of wins to begin its spring break trip in Florida on Monday, defeating the Union Dutchmen by a final of 6-3 before knocking off the St. Olaf Oles with a score of 7-2.
Against Union, the Vikings grabbed two of three doubles contests, beginning with
Nicolas Navarro and
Saman Rezaeyan at the No. 3 spot. The Dutchmen evened the score with a win at No. 2, but
Arthur Hermange and
David Larraga put Augie back out in front with an 8-6 victory at No. 1. The Vikings led 2-1 entering singles competition.Â
Navarro and Hermange began singles with consecutive wins to move the score to 4-1 in Augie's favor. Union earned a point back to inch closer, but the Vikings sealed the match win following a third-set tiebreaker win at No. 5 from
Timothee Philip. Rezaeyan also earned a three-set victory at No. 4 to notched the sixth victory of the match for Augustana and complete the 6-3 final score.Â
In the second contest of the day, Augie jumped out to a 3-0 lead with wins in all three doubles matches over St. Olaf.
Gabriel Luna and Philip secured an 8-3 triumph at No. 1, while Rezaeyan and Navarro at No. 2 and
Aingeru Garcia and
Arthur Mendes at No. 3 each claimed an 8-5 victory.Â
The Vikings won four of six singles matches to take the contest by a 7-2 final. Philip,
Deepak Vayara, and Garcia all won in straight sets at No. 2, 3, and 4, while
Arturo Asensio fought back from a first-set loss to defeat his opponent in three.
With the wins, Augustana improves to 10-4 on the season. The team will be back in action tomorrow against Whitworth.
