Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team wrapped up its CWPA weekend in Minnesota on Sunday, grabbing a 12-6 win over Carthage before defeating No. 9 Macalester by a score of 14-4.
In game one against Carthage, the Vikings faced an early 1-0 and 2-1 deficit before
Jillian Hagmann's goal brought the teams even. AÂ late strike from
Maggie Caliendo with 18 seconds left in the first gave Augustana its first lead as they brought a 3-2 advantage into the second.
Anita Rodgers and
Casey Barragan each notched goals in a low-scoring second quarter. Augie held Carthage to just one point through the final eight minutes of the half to move the advantage to 5-3 entering the break. The Firebirds pulled even with the first two tallies of the third quarter, but consecutive goals from
Charlotte Newport and
Annelie McGhee put the differential back to two. Carthage added one more before the end of the third to bring Augie's lead to 7-6 with eight minutes remaining. The Vikings pulled away with a big final frame, out-scoring the Firebirds 5-0 to take the game 12-6. Four different Vikings earned goals in the fourth, including back-to-back points from Hagmann to close out the period.
Hagmann and Rodgers each snagged three goals to lead the Vikings, while
Natalie Abril earned the win in net.Â
In game two against Macalester, Barragan accounted for the only two goals of a low-scoring opening period to give Augie a 2-0 lead after eight minutes. The lead stretched out to five with three more goals in the second, with Barragan grabbing her third of the contest to go along with tallies from Caliendo and
Ocean Akau. Augustana led 5-0 at halftime.
The run for the Vikings continued with the second half's first three goals, two of which came from Barragan. Macalester secured its first goal of the game late in the third after being held scoreless for over 20 minutes of game time. The Vikings maintained separation and led 8-2 after three quarters prior to erupting for six goals in the fourth to nab the double-digit victory.
Barragan finished with a monster game for Augustana, scoring a career-high 11 times.
Lizzie Pelzman racked up 15 saves in net.
With the wins, Augie improves to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the CWPA. The team will be back in action for its final conference weekend of the regular season on April 6-7 in Erie, Pa.
