ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team picked up a home win on Wednesday, defeating the Clarke Pride by a score of 10-3.
Augie jumped out to a fast start, scoring the game's first six goals, which included a 4-0 opening quarter.
Graham Shap notched the first tally after five minutes of play, followed by scores from
Carson Ghys and
Brady Holtz on assists from
Elijah Graesser. Augustana wrapped up its 4-0 first period with a goal from
Jake Moore.
The Vikings increased their lead to 6-0 in the second as Moore and Shap each notched their second goals of the night. Augie's defense held the Pride scoreless through the first 27 minutes of play, but the visitors finally secured their first and only goal of the first half with 2:42 showing on the clock. Holtz countered with the final tally of the half to move the Vikings' cushion back out to six with a score of 7-1 at intermission.
Another scoreless quarter ensued for the Augie defense, holding the Pride in check through the first 15 minutes of the second half. The Vikings added two onto their lead in the period, grabbing scores from Shap and
Jack Connolly to make it a 9-1 advantage heading into the final period. The lead reached 10 halfway through the fourth on Connolly's second goal of the contest before the Pride earned the game's final two points.
Augustana out-shot Clarke 45-36 in the win and was led in goals by Shap with three. The Augie defense was highlighted in net by
Gus Magnusson, who collected 13 saves, while
Tommy Kopman led the team with four caused turnovers.
Tommy Wimmers also picked up six ground balls to lead the Vikings, while
Trevor Herman won eight of nine faceoffs.Â
With the victory, Augie improves to 1-4 on the season. The Vikings will remain at home for their next game on Saturday when they take on the Cornell Rams.Â
