Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team wrapped up its trip to Southern California on Saturday for the 2024 Claremont Convergence, knocking off the Occidental Tigers on the road by a score of 11-8 before falling to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds by a score of 15-9.
Casey Barragan accounted for the lone score of the opening quarter for either team before a busy second period made it a 4-4 game at halftime. The Vikings led 3-1 at one points following scores from
Anita Rodgers and
Ocean Akau, but the Tigers notched three of the final four to even the game at half.
Maggie Caliendo accounted for the other score for Augie on a powerplay strike.Â
Augustana broke away with a big third period, posting a 5-1 margin to make it a four-goal cushion entering the final eight minutes of action. Four different Vikings notched goals in the third, with Barragan grabbing her second of the game and
Charlotte Newport earning two in just the quarter alone. Occidental out-scored Augie 3-2 in the fourth, but tallies from
Jillian Hagmann and
Olivia Parry allowed the Vikings to remain out in front and hang on for the win.
Barragan and Newport led the way with the two scores each, while Barragan also added four drawn exclusions.
Lizzie Pelzman earned the win in net with 11 saves.
In game two against Fresno Pacific, the Sunbirds jumped out to a 3-2 lead after eight minutes of play, but Augie followed with a 2-1 margin in its favor in the second to even the score at four points apiece at the halftime break. Fresno Pacific pulled away with a big third quarter, out-scoring Augustana 7-1 to bring a 11-5 lead into the final frame. Both teams notched four goals in the fourth to complete the 15-9 victory for the Sunbirds.
Barragan led the scoring for Augie with three goals.
The Vikings will be back in action next Saturday at home vs. McKendree.
