CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating the Cornell Rams by a final lf 8-1 before falling to the Coe Kohawks by a score of 5-4.
Against Cornell, two of the three doubles matches went in favor of Augie, with the lone loss coming in a tiebreaker at No. 2.
Mia Reese and
Ava Lannen made quick of their opponent with an 8-1 score at No. 3, while
Caitlyn Hanulikova and
Hannah Colbert were victorious at No. 1 with a final of 8-5.
Augie took all six singles matches to complete the win, with five coming in consecutive sets.
Anna-Maria Huebel earned a win at No. 1, while Hanulikova did not drop at game at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph. Colbert and
Maitreyi Shrikhande earned victories at the two middle slots and
Hattie Timerman and
Maddy Harned rounded out the team wins after handling their opponents at No. 5 and 6. Harned bounced back from a first-set loss to claim her match.
In the finale against Coe, Augie had the early advantage with two doubles wins to begin the match. Colbert and Hanulikova snagged an 8-3 win at No. 1, while Huebel and
Natasha Gauerke grabbed an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead heading into singles. The Kohawks stormed back in singles with wins in four of the six contests to steal the 5-4 victory. Hanulikova and Shrikhande earned the two wins for the Vikings.
With the results, Augustana moves to 6-7 on the season. The team will be back in action on March 16 vs. Roosevelt.
