ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's tennis team dropped a pair of home matches on Saturday, falling to the Carthage Firebirds by a score of 5-4 and to the Roosevelt Lakers by a final of 8-1.
Against Carthage, the Vikings salvaged one of the three doubles matches, earning a tight win at No. 1 from
Arthur Hermange and
David Larraga in a tiebreaker. Carthage led 2-1 entering singles play after winning at the No. 2 spot before stealing a tiebreaker win at No. 3.
In singles, the two teams split the six matches, resulting in a close 5-4 win for the Firebirds. Hermange was victorious at No. 1 in consecutive sets, while
Timothee Philip and NIcolas Navarro claimed wins at No. 5 and 6.
David Larraga bounced back from a set one loss to force a third, but fell in his tie-breaking set at No. 2.
Augie then dropped a non-conference showdown to Roosevelt in the finale.
Deepak Vayara earned the lone win for the Vikings against the Lakers, taking down his opponent at No. 1 single by a score of 7-5, 6-4.
The Vikings will be back in action on March 25 against Union (N.Y.) down in Orlando, Fla.
