Baseball hosts two-day invitational against Buena Vista and Dominican

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team will host the Buena Vista Beavers and the Dominican Stars on March 16-17 for the Augustana Invitational. 

Augie owns an 8-3 record and returns to action after earning a 3-0 record at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida on March 8-9. In their most recent game against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, the Vikings earned a 16-8 victory. Augie totaled 13 hits in the win, led by three apiece from Colton Davis and Daniel Mosele. Mosele led the way with four runs batted in and a home run, while Chance Carruthers earned the win on the mound after striking out eight in 5.1 innings. 

In their opening matchup on Saturday, Augie battles the Buena Vista Beavers, who own an overall record of 9-3 and are receiving votes in the latest d3baseball top 25 poll. The Beavers enter the contest after an 11-10 win against UW-Oshkosh on March 9. Buena Vista had 17 hits, while their opponent obtained 16 hits. Joel Garcia and Drew Taylor led with three hits, while Brandon Jenkins batted three runs in. The Beavers hold a 1-0 all-time record over Augie. 

Sunday's game will be against the Dominican Stars, who have an overall record of 7-4. The Stars enter the weekend after a 6-5 loss to Trine on March 9, where Dominican had 10 hits and their opponent had seven. CJ Kalekas led the Stars with three hits, while Matt Galdi batted in two runs. Augie holds a 2-0 all-time record over Dominican, with their last matchup resulting in a 16-2 win for the Vikings at last season's Augustana Invitational. 

Following the invitational, the Vikings will also host the Dubuque Spartans on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Dubuque currently sits at 9-2 on the season and returns to action after collecting a 5-0 win against St. Norbert on March 3. Kyle Radi led the Spartans with two of their 10 hits, while their opponent obtained two. Augie holds a 9-2-1 all-time record over Dubuque, with their last matchup ending in tie with a score of 5-5 on March 7, 2019. 

The Vikings open their weekend on Saturday against Buena Vista at 1 p.m. at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
