Men’s volleyball defeats St. Norbert to conclude successful trip to Wisconsin

DE PERE, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team collected a 3-0 sweep against the St. Norbert Green Knights on Sunday, with set scores of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-20.

In the first set, the Vikings grabbed an early advantage after a block by Ty Heater and Aidan Bolen to create a 2-1 score, with a kill by Ben Schultz later increasing the gap to four at 8-4. The Green Knights tied the game at 18-18 and again at 20-20 before Augie scored three consecutive points to take a 23-20 advantage. A kill by Garrett McNelis from Colin Schaefer closed out the first set 25-22.

Augie started the second set with a block by Heater and Schaefer to secure an early lead. St. Norbert tied the game at 4-4 and they took the slight advantage until a kill by Zach Moreano tied the set back up at 6-6. Both teams tied again until two back-to-back kills from the Vikings turned the lead back in their favor at 9-7. Augie stretched their lead out to as many as seven and maintained its lead before a kill by Heater closed out the second set with a final score of 25-22.

In a back-and-forth third set, the Vikings started with a kill by Bolen from Moreano, but both teams tied two times before a two-point run by Augie to make a 6-4 score. The Vikings slowly increased their distance from the Green Knights, with a kill by McNelis moving the gap to six points to make the score 21-15. Bolen closed out the final set with a kill from Degnan for a final score of 25-20. 

As a team, Augie hit .309, while holding St. Norbert to .118. Bolen led with 11 kills, with Moreano following with eight. Degnan had 16 assists, while Schaefer had 15 and Max Sellers had 16 digs.  

With the win, the Vikings improve to 7-1 overall and will stay on the road and travel south to St. Louis, Mo. on Friday, February 9 for a pair of non-conference showdowns.
