Men’s volleyball sweeps Clarke to set program record for most wins

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team defeated the Clarke Pride in three sets on Thursday to increase their winning streak to 10.

The two teams traded points to begin the match before Augie found three consecutive scores to take an early advantage. The Vikings increased the gap to as many as six on two different occasions, with the Pride never being within three points. Sean Carlson closed out the first set with a kill from Colin Schaefer to take set one by a 25-21 final score.

Clarke grabbed the first two points of the second set, but the Vikings secured the following three points to take a one-point lead. Both teams tied six more times before a 4-0 run by the Vikings helped them later extend their lead to five at 15-10. The Vikings stretched the differential out to seven two times throughout the set before securing a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 win.

In a back-and-forth third set, the two teams tied five teams to begin the game. A kill by Carlson evened the score at 10 and both teams tied the set three additional times before Augie used an 8-3 spurt to grab a 21-16 advantage. Clarke caught back up and eventually faced set point with a lead of 24-23, but Augie obtained the final three points of the set with a service ace by Aidan Bolen closing out the match win.

Carlson led the Vikings with 14 kills, while Schaefer had 35 assists. Defensively, Max Sellers tallied 13 digs and Ty Heater had three blocks.

With the win, Augie moves to 13-1 after finishing the month of February undefeated. The 13 wins are the most in program history with still 10 matches remaining. The Vikings will host No. 8 North Central on Saturday to begin conference play.
