Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's water polo team collected a pair of wins on Saturday to begin a weekend stay at the Macalester Invite, defeating the VMI Keydets in game one by a score of 16-8 before knocking off the Ottawa (Ariz.) Spirit by a final of 11-8.
In game one against the Keydets, the two teams played to a 2-2 tie after eight minutes of action, with VMI evening the score following Augie goals from
Casey Barragan and
Anita Rodgers. To begin the second, Augustana regained its two-point differential with tallies from
Waiahuli Akau and
Maggie Caliendo, but the Keydets notched two of the final three points of the half to stay within a point at the break.
Annie Opal Dickson accounted for the final score for the Vikings in the quarter to help make it a 5-4 game heading into intermission.
Augie pulled away in the second half, using a 5-2 margin in the third to bring the score to 10-6 with eight minutes to go. After VMI deadlocked the score at five, the Vikings saw two goals within the next 90 seconds before answering another VMI point with three of their own to close the frame.
Jillian Hagmann,
Charlotte Newport, and
Annelie McGhee all found the back of the net to close the quarter and make it a four-point lead heading into the fourth.
The Vikings continued to pour it on in the fourth, adding onto their scoring run with the quarter's first four goals. Barragan tallied the first two, followed by a goal each from
Ocean Akau and Dickson. Augie out-scored VMI 6-2 in the final eight minutes and 11-4 in the second half alone.
Barragan led all scorers with six goals to go with three drawn exclusions, while Caliendo and Dickson each scored twice.
Victoria Guest secured a game-high four assists, while
Susan Palmentera-Reid earned the win in net after saving 14 shots.
In the second contest of the day, the Vikings took on the Spirit of Ottawa, resulting in an 11-8 victory for Augie. The two teams played to a 3-3Â deadlock after eight minutes, each scoring three times before the Vikings used a 4-2 second frame to bring the score to 7-5 at the halftime break.
In the third, the Vikings' defense held the Spirit scoreless to make it a 9-5 advantage with a quarter to go. Ottawa inched closer and took the fourth with a 3-2 differential, but Augie held on to seal the three-point win.
Barragan led Augustana with five goals in the win, while Newport tallied three to go with a pair of steals.
Lizzie Pelzman saved 15 shots in net and contributed five steals and two assists.
With the victories, the Vikings improve to 3-1 on the season. The team will close out the Macalester Invite tomorrow with games against Occidental and Carthage.
