Men's basketball edged by Carroll in OT

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team came up short on the road on Saturday, falling in overtime to the Carroll Pioneers by a score of 77-74.

The home team got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first six points and jumping out to a 12-2 lead after six minutes of action. The cushion for the Pioneers continued to expand as they held Augie to just 11 points through 15 minutes. The advantage eventually grew to 17 at 33-16, but the Vikings crawled back and cut the deficit to 10 thanks to a 9-2 run. Carroll hit a half-court three as time expired to bring the score to 38=25 heading into halftime. Augustana shot just 37 percent compared to Carroll's 52 percent clip in the first.

The Pioneers saw their lead move in their favor to begin the second half, stretching it out to 15 through four minutes of action. From there, the Vikings slowly inched back into the game, getting within single digits at the 13-minute mark after a jumper from Matt Hawkins to make it 49-41. The two teams traded a basket each to get the differential at eight before Augustana used a 9-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 52-51 with 9:32 remaining. The back-and-forth affair continued, but Carroll successfully pulled away and earned a lead of five on two separate occasions, with the latest coming around seven minutes. A 6-0 run from Augie, including four points from Hawkins, gave the Vikings the lead back with five to play. The two teams tied twice more down the stretch, with the final deadlock of regulation resulting from a layup from Mike Hamilton with 44 seconds to go. Each of the defenses secured a stop to force overtime tied at 66.

Carroll grabbed the first five points of the extra session and maintained a five-point cushion until a free throw from Evan Ambrose brought the Vikings within three with 90 seconds remaining. A layup by Hamilton later brought the Vikings within two before free throws from the Pioneers made it a three-point game with less than 10 seconds left. Following a good free throw from Ambrose, an intentional miss fell into the hands of Carroll to seal the overtime victory.

Four Vikings reached double figures, led by Hawkins with 16 points and Hamilton with 13. Chase Larsen and Ambrose each had 12. As a team, Augie hit 60 percent of its shots in the second half to help lead the comeback surge. The Vikings also held Carroll to just 28 percent from three and one made shot in overtime, but were out-scored at the free-throw line 22-10.

With the loss, Augie ends the regular season with a 9-16 record and 6-10 mark in the CCIW. The team will need a Wheaton loss vs. North Park Saturday night to clinch a CCIW Tournament berth.
