WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team will visit the Carroll Pioneers on Saturday, February 17 in a win-and-in regular season finale.
The Vikings enter the weekend with a 9-15 overall record and 6-9 mark in the CCIW, currently riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Millikin last Saturday by a score of 81-59. Earning his first start of the year, seniorÂ
Brett David got the Vikings on the board first following a defensive stop and layup. Augie never trailed the rest of the way, building a first-half lead as big as 15 points on three different occasions.
Evan Ambrose's basket with three seconds to go moved the advantage to 34-15 heading into the break.
Millikin inched closer with the second half's first six points before the run was halted with a David three-pointer. The two teams then went back and forth for the next seven minutes, with the Vikings owning a lead as big as 17 before the Big Blue cut it to 11 with 10:47 to play. The 11-point margin was the closest the visitors got as Augie responded with a quick 5-0 spurt before pushing the cushion out to 20 points at 5:18. David's three-pointer around the two-minute mark put the exclamation mark on the Senior Night win as the differential reached 22 points, which proved to be the final margin.
Tyler Knuth led all scorers with 21 points, while Ambrose was next in line with 13 points and five rebounds.Â
Chase Larsen also added 11 points and six rebounds.Â
Carroll currently sits with a 13-11 overall record and 6-9 mark in the CCIW, tied for fifth place with Augustana at the moment. The Pioneers recently fell at home to Elmhurst in overtime on Wednesday by a score of 76-75. After taking the lead late, the Bluejays hit a three with just two seconds remaining to steal the victory. With the loss, the Pioneers' record at home this season now sits at 7-5, with that their first defeat on their home court since January 20. Carroll is led by a pair of scorers averaging 12.7 points per game this season in Aaron Watford and Kobe Simpson. They also boast four others averaging at least seven or more.
Augustana is 61-32 all-time against Carroll, but has dropped two in a row to the Pioneers. Carroll used a big second-half comeback to knock off the Vikings in Rock Island by a score of 74-70 earlier this season. Knuth led all scorers with 26 points.
Both the Vikings and Pioneers can clinch a CCIW Tournament berth with a victory. Augie can also move into the No. 4 spot with a win and North Central loss on Saturday.Â
Start time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.Â
