Men's basketball hits the road to take on Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's basketball team will head back out on the road on Saturday, December 21 to take on the Benedictine Eagles in a non-conference clash.

Augustana sits at 6-3 on the season and is coming off a 113-68 victory over the Knox Prairie Fire on Wednesday, the most points score in a game for the Vikings since the 2018 season. A total of 14 players contributed points in the win, led by Tyler Knuth's 23 on 7-12 shooting. Evan Ambrose followed with 16 points, while Ray Maurchie and Matt Hawkins each scored 10. The Vikings shot 56.8 percent from the field and 47.8 percent from three.

On a national level, Knuth currently ranks as the nation's top free throw shooter at 97.4 percent. He also ranks 16th nationally with 3.33 3-pointers made per game and 20th nationally with a 47-6 3-point field goal percentage. Staishaun Kelley is 26th in the nation in steals per game at 2.89.

Benedictine enters Saturday with a 3-6 overall record, recently picking up its second straight win with a 98-84 triumph over Lakeland. The Eagles scored 48 points in the first half on their way to an 11-point lead before putting up 50 in the second to run away with the game. Four players scored in double figures for Benedictine, with two collecting 20-plus points. Senior Tanner Resch was the game's top scorer with 24 after connecting on 14-17 attempts from the free throw line. Resch is one of three players averaging double-digit points for the Eagles and is leading the way at 18.3 points per outing. Benedictine is 2-1 on its home court this season, picking up wins over Dominican and Wheaton. The lone loss came to nationally-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran by a score of 83-75.

Augie leads the all-timer series over the Eagles 8-2. The two teams squared off last season in Rock Island, resulting in a 74-68 win for the Vikings. Knuth led a balanced attack for the team with 19 points.
