ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team fell to the Coe Kohawks on Saturday by a score of 68-56.
The Kohawks got on the board at 8:47 and Augie followed 20 seconds later after Kadence Tatum secured a floating jump shot. Tia Lewis evened the score at 6-6 after a driving layup and followed with a free throw to take the advantage. Coe snatched the lead but Paige Melton brought it back to a draw and both teams remained neck-to-neck to close out the first half with a score of 15-14 in the Kohawks favor.
Coe expanded the differential in the second quarter before Lewis put the Vikings back in front after back-to-back made shots. The Kohawks secured an 11-5 margin in the last six minutes of the first half to lead 30-24.
The Vikings were even with the Kohawks in the third quarter with an 18-18 score. Augie posted a 10-4 run in the first three minutes to even the game at 34. Emma Berg answered a pair of free throws from the visitors with a three-pointer to put Augie out in front for the first time in the second half. The teams continued to trade baskets, but a 7-1 scoring run by the Kohawks gave them another six-point advantage exiting the frame.
In the final quarter, Coe ran away with the game scoring the first four points to increase the gap to 10. Augie got as close as four after a driving layup by Dolly Smith, but Coe saw success at the free throw line to keep its distance and stretch the margin out to double figures.
Berg and Melton led the team with 12 points, while Melton also had three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Lewis followed with 10 points and two rebounds, while Tatum notched five assists and five rebounds.
