ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's basketball team earned their second win of the season on Tuesday, defeating the Monmouth Fighting Scots at home by a score of 89-68.
The Vikings were quick to grab the advantage after notching the first seven points of the game within the first three minutes. Paige Melton moved the difference to as many as 14 with just over four minutes to go, which proved to be the margin at the quarter's end. Augie outscored the Scots 28-14 in the first 10 minutes of play and held a plus-nine rebounding advantage.
In the second, Augie maintained a strong offense effort against Monmouth, shooting 61.9 percent on field goals. The Vikings scored 34 points in the second quarter alone and led by 30 after a buzzer-beater shot from Jazmeriah Jones to push the halftime lead to 62-32. Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first half, with the Vikings hitting over 60 percent of their looks on 19 more attempts than the Scots.
Augie's advantage grew to 31 early in the second half, but the offense cooled off as Monmouth inched closer following a 21-12 score in favor of the visitors. The Scots had more chances at the free throw line to outscore the Vikings in the quarter, but Augie led 74-53 into the final stretch.
The fourth quarter was played to an even 15-15 score to complete the 89-68 final. A majority of both team's points came from behind the charity line, with the Vikings notching six of their eight attempts.
Six different Vikings collected double-digit points in the win. Tia Lewis was the top scorer with 21 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Audrey Erickson followed with 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Berg had 13. Melton notched 12 points, Jazmeriah Jones secured 11, and Kadence Tatum finished with 10.
