NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team will venture on the road on Wednesday, October 9 when they visit the North Central Cardinals for a CCIW clash.
Augie currently sits at 7-2-2 on the season and 1-1 in CCIW play after dropping a home contest to the Carroll Pioneers on Saturday by a score of 1-0. The two teams played to a scoreless tie through 45 minutes of action, with Carroll holding an 11-3 shot advantage in the opening half. The Vikings saw all three of their attempts come within a 10-minute span early on as
Liesl Whitener fired away two and
Caelan Cole had the other.
Sara Schinker stopped eight of the Pioneers' 11 shots in the first half to help keep Augie deadlocked at 0-0. In the second, Carroll finally broke the tie with a tally in the 64th minute. The Vikings' defense continued to hold strong and kept Carroll at just the one goal despite an 11-1 shot disparity, but could not find the back of the net as 1-0 score remained intact through the end. Cole had the lone look at the goal in the second for Augie, but it ended up saved.
Schinker finisher her afternoon with 12 saves for the second consecutive outing and was named the CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week for defense on Tuesday.
North Central enters Wednesday with an 8-4 overall record and 0-1 mark in conference action. The Cardinals recently dropped out of the latest USC top 25 poll and are currently in the midst of a two-game losing skid. In its most recent outing, North Central fell on the road to Chicago by a score of 4-3 to make it a second straight loss by one goal. The Cardinals have seen a lot of success on their home field this season where they sport a 6-0 record, which includes a 6-0 win over No. 8 UW-La Crosse. The team is led this season by Elle Sutter, who sits atop the CCIW with 13 goals, just one ahead of Augie's Whitener.
The Cardinals are 21-6-2 all-time vs. the Vikings and have won three of the last four meetings. North Central was victorious in Naperville last season by a final of 8-0.
