ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's volleyball team picked up its second straight win on Saturday, defeating the UW-La Crosse Eagles in five ses on Senior Day.
The Vikings found themselves behind early in the opening set, but took control of the game with a 7-1 scoring run to turn a 13-10 deficit into a 17-14 advantage. From there, the Eagles stormed back out in front with four points in a row, but another big scoring outburst from the Vikings clinched the opening frame by a score of 25-19.
Kira Nelson and Carmerla Carbone combined for five kills during the team's 8-1 scoring outburst to close out set one.
In the second it was Augie that had quick start, scoring seven of the game's first nine points. The Vikings never trailed the rest of the way, expanding a lead out to as many as nine at a score of 16-7 and again at 21-12. La Crosse strung together a late threat and pulled within three at 23-20, but back-to-back kills from Nelson and Carbone sealed another win and gave Augustana a 2-0 lead in the match. The Eagles responded with a nine-point win in the third before squeaking out a two-point victory in the fourth to force a fifth and final game.
UW-La Crosse grabbed the early edge in the fifth after beginning with a 5-1 run to kick things off. Augie quickly closed the gap with the next three rally wins, but later faced another four-point difference after the Eagles moved the score to 9-5.
Carli Udovich halted the run with a kill and later evened the score with another to cap off a 4-0 spurt for the Vikings. The two teams traded a pair of scores to move the deadlock to 11-11 before an attack error from La Crosse and a kill by
Alexis Richards gave Augie its largest lead of the set. The Eagles got one back to pull within one, but was followed by a
Kylie Collachia kill to make it match point for the Vikings.
Kacie Swanson wrapped up the victory for the team with a service ace for the second straight night as Augie held on for the five-set win.
Emily Schipper led the team with 16 kills to go with 13 digs, while Carbone and Richards followed next with nine kills apiece. Collachia ended the afternoon with a career-high 45 assists along with 12 digs.
Mallory Coley finished with 5 block assists and two solo.
With the win, Augustana improves to 10-16 overall. The team will be back in action Friday at North Park,
