ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team will play its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, October 19 when the Grinnell Pioneers visit Thorson-Lucken Field.
Augustana currently sits with a 7-4-3 overall record, recently competing to a 1-1 draw at home with Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday. Both teams saw plenty of opportunities in a back-and-forth opening half, but it was the Vikings who struck first as
Lexi Dominguez took a pass from
Allison Gibeau and notched her first goal of the season to make a 1-0 lead for Augie after 28 minutes of play. Augustana out-shot Illinois Wesleyan 5-4 through the remaining 17 minutes of the first half, but the Titans found the equalizing goal in the 38th to draw even and bring the score to 1-1 entering halftime.
Illinois Wesleyan notched three of the first four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second period, but the Vikings responded with three of the following four attempts over the course of the next 10. Augustana saw four shots off the mark in the final three minutes before the game ended in the 1-1 draw. The two teams combined for 40 shots in the 90 minutes of action.
Sara Schinker finished with eight saves.
Grinnell enters Saturday with a 6-4-1 record and has won three of its last four outings, including a 1-0 victory at Illinois College this past Saturday. The Pioneers were out-shot 12-7 in the win, but notched the first and only goal of the game just seven minutes in. It was the third straight game decided by a single goal for Grinnell, who also sits with a 2-1-1 road record this year. The team has one common opponent with Augie this season, also defeating Coe back on September 1. Maya Mozena leads the Pioneers with three goals in 2024.
Saturday will be the ninth meeting ever between the two programs, with each winning four times apiece. The Pioneers claimed a 1-0 victory in Grinnell last season.
