Women's soccer plays to 1-1 draw with Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer played to a 1-1 draw with the visiting Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Wednesday at Thorson-Lucken Field.

Both teams saw plenty of opportunities in a back-and-forth opening half, but it was the Vikings who struck first as Lexi Dominguez took a pass from Allison Gibeau and notched her first goal of the season to make a 1-0 lead for Augie after 28 minutes of play. Augustana out-shot Illinois Wesleyan 5-4 through the remaining 17 minutes of the first half, but the Titans found the equalizing goal in the 38th to draw even and bring the score to 1-1 entering halftime. The Vikings led in the shots category 12-9 through 45 minutes, with four being on target.

Another busy half ensued on each side of the field, but the two defenses stood strong and did not allow a goal the rest of the way despite 19 combined shots taken. Illinois Wesleyan notched three of the first four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second period, but the Vikings responded with three of the following four attempts over the course of the next 10. Augustana saw four shots off the mark in the final three minutes before the game ended in the 1-1 draw.

The Vikings out-shot the Titans 23-17 in the game, led by 13 from Liesl Whitener and three apiece from Paige Bingen and Samira Khobdeh. Sara Schinker collected eight saves in net.

With the results, Augie now sits at 7-4-3 on the season and 1-3-1 in CCIW action. The team will be back in action Saturday for a non-conference tilt against Grinnell.
