ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team will be back at home on Wednesday, October 2 when they host the Wartburg Knights for a non-conference matchup.
Augustana currently sits at 7-1-1 on the season and is coming off a bounce-back win on Saturday at North Park by a score of 2-1. It was a busy opening half on both sides of the field as the two teams combined for 17 shots, six of which were on goal.
Liesl Whitener broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 42nd minute on a pass from
Paige Bingen to give Augie a 1-0 lead at the break.
Nearly seven minutes into the second, Whitener found the back of the net for the second time in the game, taking a rebound off her own penalty kick and sending it in for her 12th goal of the year. Augie continued its attack over the course of the next 10 minutes, out-shooting North Park 3-0 over that span, two of which were on target. After fending off Augustana on its side of the field, North Park inched closer with a tally in the 78th minute to cut the margin in half. Augie allowed just two shots through the final 12 minutes and held on for the one-goal victory.
Whitener currently sits second in the league in goals with 12, but has played three less games than the leader with 13.
Mary Baker ranks fifth in assists.
Wartburg enters Wednesday's meeting with a 5-4-1 record and is currently riding a three-game winning streak dating back to September 22. During their win streak, the Knights have out-scored their opponents 5-2, winning each game by one goal. The victory back on the 22nd over UW-Stevens Point snapped a three-game winless streak. In its most recent outing, Wartburg defeated Dubuque in ARC play by a final of 1-0. Four players are tied for the team lead in goals this season with two apiece. The Knights are 2-2 in road games this season, with the last being the win over Dubuque.
Start time on Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
