ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team keeps their home streak running as they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders on Saturday, January 27.
The Vikings are currently 3-0 on the season and enter the weekend after defeating the Edgewood Eagles in three sets on Thursday with set scores of 25-23, 25-24, and 25-19. In the first set, neither team saw a lead of more than two points until the Vikings overcame a 14-13 deficit with three scores in a row. Edgewood stuck around to cut the game back to a point at 23-22, but the Vikings closed the first set with a kill by Sean Carlson to take the win with a score of 25-23.
In another back-and-forth frame, both teams rallied and tied the game three times before Augie secured three consecutive points to take a 6-3 lead. The Eagles caught back up to a one-point differential at 8-7 before closing out a 3-0 scoring burst to regain the advantage. Both teams tied several more times until Augie scored the final four points of the set to earn a 25-21 victory and bring the match score to 2-0 in their favor.
The Vikings got off to a fast start and doubled up the Eagles 6-3 to kick off game three. The Vikings ran away with the lead, growing it out to as many as seven, as Edgewood never got within two points. Aidan Bolen wrapped up the night with a kill from Matthew Degnan to secure a six-point advantage with a 25-19 score.
The Raiders are 0-1 on the season and enter the weekend after losing in three sets to No. 14 Loras on Tuesday. As a team, MSOE hit .078 compared to their opponent who hit .232. Dorian Fiorenza led the Raiders with 11 kills and Joe Horn had 31 assists. MSOE finished the 2023 season with a 10-15 record and was 4-8 on the road. MSOE holds a 5-0 all-time record over Augie, with their last matchup resulting last season in a 3-1 win for the Raiders in Glendale, Wis. Bolen led the way with nine kills and six digs, while Degnan added 17 assists.
