Men’s volleyball defeats Edgewood 3-0

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep against the Edgewood Eagles on Thursday to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Vikings grabbed the first point of the night due to a service error by the Eagles, but the visitors followed with a point of their own to create a back-and-forth start to the match. Neither team saw a lead of more than two points until the Vikings overcame a 14-13 deficit with three scores in a row. Edgewood stuck around to cut the game back to a point at 23-22, but the Vikings closed the first set with a kill by Sean Carlson to take the win with a score of 25-23.

In another back-and-forth frame, both teams rallied and tied the game three times before Augie secured three consecutive points to take a 6-3 lead. The Eagles caught back up to a one-point differential at 8-7 before closing out a 3-0 scoring burst to regain the advantage. The Vikings followed with a kill by Garrett McNelis to even the score for the fifth time and continued with three additional points to increase the gap with a score of 12-9. Both teams tied seven more times until Augie scored the final four points of the set to earn a 25-21 victory and bring the match score to 2-0 in their favor.

The Vikings got off to a fast start and doubled up the Eagles 6-3 to kick off game three. The Vikings ran away with the lead, growing it out to as many as seven, as Edgewood was never able to get within two points. Aidan Bolen wrapped up the night with a kill from Matthew Degnan to secure a six-point advantage with a 25-19 score.

As a team, Augustana hit .215, while holding Edgewood to just .115. McNelis led the Vikings with eight kills, while Bolen snatched seven. Degnan had 15 assists, while Ty Heater and Ben Schultz had two solo blocks and one assisted.

With the win, the Vikings move to 3-0 on the season and will continue their streak at home to face MSOE on Saturday, January 27.
