Women's soccer blanks Coe in home opener

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team picked up a win in their first home game of the 2023 season on Wednesday, shutting out the visiting Coe Kohawks by a score of 3-0.

Nearly a half hour of scoreless action went by before the Vikings tallied the lone goal of the opening half. Liesl Whitener took a rebound off of an initial shot attempt, sending one by the Coe keeper with her left foot to put Augie up 1-0 heading into halftime. Just over a minute into the second half, Whitener mirrored her first-half score on the other side of the field, capitalizing on a second effort in front of the goal to notch her fourth tally of the season.

The two teams battled for almost 40 minutes without a change in the score until the 83rd minute. The Vikings made it 3-0 in their favor when Samira Khobdeh took a short corner kick pass from Alex Locke and sent it over the goalie's head and into the back of the net. Augie's 3-0 margin remained intact for the final seven minutes as the team secured their second win on the year.

Augustana out-shot Coe 17-6 on the night, holding the Kohawks to just two attempts on net. Janey Castoe earned her second shutout of the season and stopped two strikes her way, while Whitener led the team with five shots, all on goal.

The Vikings improve to 2-1 with the win and will return to action on Saturday, September 9 when they visit Concordia-Chicago.
