NORTON, Mass. -- The Augustana Vikings men's water polo team wrapped up their stay at the Bruno Classic on Sunday, picking up an 18-6 win over Mount St. Mary's before defeating Mercyhurst 22-7.
Game One (W 18-6 vs. Mount St. Mary's)
Oskar Bannister began the scoring in the first game of the day, notching a tally less than three minutes into the first quarter to put Augie out in front. The Mountaineers answered with consecutive scores within the final three minutes of the opening frame, giving them a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.
Augustana's offense exploded over the course of the next eight minutes, sending in seven goals while holding Mount St. Mary's to just one. The Vikings began the frame with three straight points, with two coming from
Alden Brinkmeier before
Stevan Rasic doubled Augie's advantage. The Mountaineers struck back to cut it to one, but four Augustana goals rounded out the first half.
Oskar Bannister earned two more of his four goals in the busy second quarter.
The Vikings continued to pour it on offensively in the second half, posting two five-goal quarters.
Jake Fisher and
JP Sutton continued the team's scoring run to begin the third period, while
Ian Palmroos countered two Mount St. Mary's scores with two of his own. Five different Vikings tallied a goal in the final quarter to close out the 12-point victory.
Declan Hutton earned the win in net after securing 18 saves. He also added a goal in the fourth period to go with six steals.
Colin McDowell posted a game-high four drawn exclusions.
Game Two (W 22-7 vs. Mercyhurst)
In their final contest of the weekend, the Vikings quickly doubled up the Lakers in the first quarter, fueled by consecutive goals from
Rhys Lomax to begin the game.
James Davis and Bannister rounded out the 4-2 frame with scores of their own.
After trading points to begin the second, Augie erupted for five second quarter goals while holding Mercyhurst scoreless heading into halftime.
Mark Addison accounted for two of the team's tallies in the period, also seeing Bannister's second of the game to push the Vikings' cushion to 10-3 at the break.
Five more goals ensued for Augustana out of halftime. Bannister made it six points in a row for the team with his third score to begin the third, later followed up with back-to-back goals from Palmroos. Brinkmeier,
Harrison Cook,
Tyler Leslie, and
Ben Jansen all eventually found themselves in the scoring column as well as the seven-point fourth quarter helped the team cruise to the 15-point triumph.Â
A total of 12 players notched at least one goal in the win, led by four from Bannister and three apiece from Lomax and Palmroos. Hutton and
Henry Sothern combined for seven saves in net.
Augustana will have a few weeks off before traveling to California for the Claremont Convergence in Los Angeles.
