WHEATON, Ill. -- The undefeated Augustana Vikings football team will gear up for a key CCIW test on Saturday, September 23 when they travel east to take on the No. 10 ranked Wheaton Thunder.
The Vikings enter the matchup 2-0 on the season, recently setting a school record their last time out in a 74-6 trouncing of the Elmhurst Bluejays. All aspects of the game shined for the Vikings on a rainy evening that pushed back the start time three hours, seeing touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams.  After a quick forced punt by the Vikings,Â
Cole Bhardwaj put Augie on the board less than five minutes in with a nine-year touchdown toÂ
Jake Miller. Another three-and-out followed from the Bluejays, setting up the Vikings' second touchdown in as many drives.Â
Mike DiGioia added one on the ground from a yard out to make it 14-0 with just over six minutes to go in the frame. A total of 23 points were put on the scoreboard in the final six minutes of the first quarter, beginning with a bad snap over the Elmhurst punter deep in their territory that resulted in a safety. A 63-yard return on the free kick fromÂ
Josh Lim gave Augie the ball back at the Bluejays' five, setting up a second Bhardwaj to Miller connection to add onto their cushion. AÂ
Bobby Inserra punt return for a touchdown from 59 yards out andÂ
Tyler Rivelli one-yard run made it 37-0 after 15 minutes of action.
The backfield for Augustana continued to be active in the second quarter, seeing two touchdowns from two different backs.Â
Ben Ludlum added to the Vikings' lead at the 9:53 mark with his 20-yard rush, followed by a DiGioia 26-yard catch from Bhardwaj. The Vikings led 51-0 at the break.
The defense found the end zone for the first points of the third quarter asÂ
Cole Romano scooped up a fumble at the Elmhurst 37-yard line and brought it all the way back to increase the margin to 57 points. Augie added two more scores in the frame, including a 32-yard touchdown pass fromÂ
Liam Crawley toÂ
Nolin Hulett. Ludlum contributed his second score of the night from five yards out to make it 71-0 Augie entering the final quarter.Â
Sidney Maroon connected on a field goal in the fourth to bring the team to its 74th point and set a new school record for most scored in a game, breaking the previous mark of 72 vs. Hedding accomplished in 1920.
Wheaton currently sits at 2-0 on the season and is up to No. 10 in the latest d3football.com poll. The Thunder knocked off UW-Oshkosh in their season opener by a score of 30-21 in a battle of ranked teams before defeating Illinois Wesleyan last week by a final of 47-16. The Thunder out-gained the Titans by nearly 300 yards and intercepted the Titans twice in the win. Giovanni Weeks rushed for 182 yards on 21 attempts to fuel the Wheaton offense.Â
Saturday will be the 66th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Wheaton owning a 34-29-2 advantage in the series. The Thunder have won 15 in a row over the Vikings dating back to 2006, including last year's 38-28 win in Rock Island.Â
